Род был впервые описан в 1813 году и назван по имени Антонио Брассаволе (А. М. Brassavole ), венецианского дворянина и ботаника. Свое имя - Орхидея "Леди ночи", брассавола получила из-за изумительного аромата цветов, который наиболее сильно проявляется ночью.

Род состоит из 15 – 18 видов, распространен начиная от Мексики, далее в Центральной и Латинской Америке, вплоть до северных регионов Аргентины.©

Симподиальный эпифит. Местообитание - Мексика, Центральная Америка, Бразилия, Боливия и Перу. Растет на высоте около 500 метров над уровнем моря, на скалах на деревьях, часто на открытом пространстве, иногда встречается растущей на кактусах, а так же в зарослях мангровых деревьев ни их корнях. В местах обитания климат сезонный, с продолжительным сухим периодом и выпадением обильной росы по ночам.©
