Род включает в себя около 25 видов и несколько сотен искусственных гибридов. Впервые плейоне были описаны ботаником по имени David Don в 1825 году. Зарегистрированы как отдельный род только в 1903 году.

Имя Плейоне дано растению в честь мифологической нимфы, дочери Океана и нереиды Тетис (он же Фетида). В переводе с греческого, Pleione - "предназначенная чтобы увеличиваться численно". Нимфа родила целое созвездие, называемое сейчас Плеядами.

Симподиальные орхидеи, считаются полуназемными, полуэпифитными , так как чаще всего поселяются на земле, но в рыхлом субстрате из старой коры и опавших листьев деревьев. Так же, могут расти на заросших травой альпийских лугах или на покрытых мхом камнях.

В природе плейоне растут в предгорьях Гималаев - Китай, Северная Индия, Средний Непал, а так же в Таиланде, Лаосе, Вьетнаме. Поселяются, в основном, на опушках горных лесов, недалеко от линии вечных снегов, на высотах от 600 до 4200 метров над уровнем моря.

Каждое растение имеет только одну псевдобульбу. Весной начинается активная вегетация и появляется цветонос, чаще всего с одним цветком, окраска и размер которого зависит от вида или гибрида, далее развивается корневая система. После цветения вырастает один лист , его размер и форма зависит от конкретного вида. В период активного роста образуется одна или несколько замещающих молодых псевдобульб.
