Даже в начале ХХI века эпидемии холеры – желудочно-кишечного заболевания, передающегося в основном через воду, остаются серьезной проблемой для развивающихся стран. Для борьбы с холерой важно уметь прогнозировать вспышки этого заболевания. Интенсивность вспышек зависит от содержания холерных вибрионов (Vibrio cholerae) в воде. Группой исследователей из США и Бангладеш (M. Jensen et al. Modeling the role of bacteriophage in the control of cholera outbreaks. PNAS 2006. V.103. N. 12. 4652-4657) было выдвинуто предположение, что одной из главных причин временных колебаний обсемененности водных источников возбудителем заболевания являются противофазные колебания численности бактерий и соответствующих бактериофагов. Для теоретического анализа этой идеи они проанализировали математическую модель, связывающую эпидемиологию холеры и популяционную динамику бактерий и фагов. Расчеты показали, что фаг действительно может влиять на развитие вспышки холеры, причем ситуация развивается по классической схеме взаимодействия популяций хищника и жертвы. То есть, даже если фаг снижает концентрацию бактерий до безопасного уровня, дальнейшее падение численности фага может спровоцировать вспышку заболевания. Интенсивность новой вспышки определяется остаточной плотностью фаговой популяции в водоеме и выживаемостью фагов в воде. Интересно, что, согласно разработанной модели, бактериальное загрязнение водоемов с большей вероятностью вызывает вспышки заболевания чем загрязнение пищи и проникновение «грязной» воды в питьевые резервуары.
В общем, полученные авторами теоретические результаты дают целый ряд практически верифицируемых предсказаний, что позволит точно оценить качество разработанной модели.
